Come and take part in South Berks JOTI/JOTA weekend 19th - 20th October at 1st Sandhurst HQ.

Come with your group or individually to communicate with cubs and scouts around the world by radio and internet and while you are they we will help you complete one or more of these badges.

Cubs and Scouts are welcome to drop in anytime over the weekend to take part in the Jamboree.

There will be badge support sessions on Friday and Saturday please use the email above to find out when they will be running.

Cub Communicator Activity Badge

  1. Get someone to give you directions or instructions to do something.  Check that you have understood. Then follow the directions or  instructions.
  2. Get someone you know to give you a call. Write down what they say, making sure that you have all the main details.
  3. Show you can send emails and text messages. You could also show how to use a mobile phone or a tablet to send a message to someone.
  4. Introduce yourself to an adult who helps out with your Pack. Talk to them for two minutes about your life, school or hobbies.
  5. Write three simple messages using codes, ciphers, invisible ink or semaphore. Try to work out three similar messages given to you.
  6. Pass a message to someone using amateur radio.
  7. Take part in Jamboree On The Air (JOTA) or Jamboree On The Internet (JOTI).

(communication codes) 

  1. Send and receive a short message by Morse code or semaphore at a rate 
    of five words per minute.
  2. Show that you know the proper procedure for sending and receiving a message.
  3. Learn the international phonetic alphabet and define at least eight international Q code signals.
  4. Construct a simple Morse code oscillator and send a short message..

(stage 1) 

  1. Show that you can:
    • turn on and log into a computer
    • use a piece of software, for example email or a game
    • name the main parts of a computer system
    • connect a peripheral (for example a scanner or printer) to your computer and then use it
  2. Create a piece of digital media. This could be artwork, a photograph, music or animation
  3. Use the internet for research:
    • decide on an area of interest
    • find three websites with content that match your area of interest
    • collect relevant information by printing or saving the documents and/or images as files.
  4. Using your internet research, design a presentation that tells others about what you have found out. This could be an electronic or paper based presentation.

(stage 2) 

  1. Plan and then create a piece of digital media. It could be music, animation, video, CAD (Computer Aided Design) or a 3D sculpture.
  2. Show that you can:
    • send or reply to someone with a short email and include an attachment
    • download photos or other media from a camera or smart card
    • open and save a document then share it using a cloud service (like Google Docs or Microsoft OneDrive) or a USB stick
    • create a document that includes media that you’ve downloaded or copied from another source.
  3. Learn the international phonetic alphabet and define at least eight international Q code signals.
